Football Fetish: The Spat

The absolute best look in football, undoubtedly, is the spat, the over-the-cleat ankle tape job worn for support and style. In case you're scratching your head: Spats are cloth coverings that fit over the top portion of shoes or boots. Football players don't wear actual spats, but the way they tape their ankles sometimes makes it look that way. Who wants to wear clunky black cleats with high white socks? Nobody! Not to mention black cleats with low white socks, this look is enough to get a player snatched off the field and beaten by the fashion police. And the spat is completely functional: Having played football in both high school and college, I can't imagine what I would have done without the spat. My favorite is the black on black spat, which consists of a black cleat wrapped with black tape. Athletes at Auburn, Missouri, Miami, Colorado, Michigan, and Ohio State employ the use of spats. Spats are sometimes used when a player injures an ankle. If you look closely in some games a player will have one shoe spatted in order to protect an old injury or help support a new one. Jasper Brinkley of South Carolina wore a single spat against Vandy last night.

Spatting is part of the grossly overlooked subsection of gridiron stylings. Other overlooked football fashion basics are visors, towels, tape belts, and any different combination of arm and leg adornments. In the words of Deion Sanders “If you look good you feel good. If you feel good you play good. If you play good they pay good.” Therefore, spats are the key to financial success for any football player.

The godfather of the spatted look was Colts halfback Lenny Moore The short version is that it provided more ankle support. Moore whose nickname was, of course, "Spats" is the only player whose tape was restricted to the upper part of the shoe. The more typical version involves taping under the bottom of the shoe, making sure that it does not come off in the heat of battle. Because the tape can obscure the Nike and Reebok logos, the manufacturers have responded by moving their logos toward the toe of the shoe instead of on the side of the shoe.

Manufacturer guidelines in the NFL have become so specific that Nike and Reebok will end a sponsorship agreement with a player if they do not go spat-free. This was the case for many of the New England Patriots who chose to spat-up for the super bowl. In fact, it was a dispute over this very issue that led Auburn to switch from Nike shoes to New Balance. Word on the street is that Nike was upset that Auburn was taping over the swoosh on the star running backs Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams a few years back, to protect ankles, nothing devious to spite Nike. Rumor also has it that Nike dropped Auburn over it. Auburn now has an athletic apparel sponsorship from Under Armor. This issue that Auburn had with Nike can be viewed as a spat over spats, as it were.

Oregon is king of football uniforms, that is a fact that was handed down to us football brethren by Nastradamus. However, if you look closely during a game you will notice that some of the players who undoubtedly have a subscription to GQ and choose to adorn themselves with spats in accordance with high fashion values. So next time you see a tailback break through the line and cut left know he could not have done it unless he was spatted up! DO WORK SON!

Gustav Came and New Orleans Stayed

Hurricane Gustav struck New Orleans this past Monday. Many feared it would be a Category 4 hurricane much like Katrina three years ago, but thankfully it was not it was only a Category 2.

Many Louisiana football programs took the proper precautions. Tulane evacuated New Orleans and went to Birmingham on Saturday. They practiced Monday morning at Samford University. Tulane plays its season opener at Alabama on Saturday and will practice in Birmingham all week.

Louisiana-Lafayette has a bye this week and players were allowed to stay or evacuate. McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., plays at home game against Delta State on Saturday and players were given the same options to stay or evacuate.

The LSU football team which is an hour Northwest of New Orleans chose to stay at home and take on the storm. They were not in any extreme danger because they were not as close to the coast.

Southeastern Louisiana moved their football operations from Hammond, La., to Oxford, Miss., on Sunday. They were using Ole Miss' practice fields and workout rooms Monday in preparation for their game at Mississippi State.

Nicholls State in Thibodaux, LA had postponed its game at New Mexico State this week and the storm expected to hit Thibodaux extremley hard causing most players to evacuate.

The New Orleans Saints went to Indiana and practiced at the RCA dome, but soon after Gustav passed the Saints announced they would return to New Orleans to play their home opener agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Superdome. Many Superdome officials stayed in New Orleans to weather the storm and watch the stadium. The stadium never lost power and sustained Gustav's winds.

The levees in the city stayed intact as well. There was one in the Southeast region of the city that caused officals to take extra caution, but other than that everything is all good in the N.O.

There are people without power and there is lots of damage but it is no where near as bad as Katrina. We at 6magazineonline have the city of New Orleans in our prayers as well as all those cities and countries affected by this storm.

We encourage you to donate to help the victims of Gustav, visit http://networkforgood.blogspot.com/2008/07/hurricane-gustav-how-you-can-help.html.

Week 2 Preview

East Carolina At West Virginia

East Carolina fresh off their upset on the road at Virginia Tech will get its second stern test of the season with Pat White and the Mountaineers coming to town. Reality check Pirates, They will not get blown out but will get put in their place 35-14.

Cincinnati At Oklahoma

Oklahoma destroyed Tenn-Chattanooga last week 57-2. The Sooners will get a test from a Bearcat squad that is better than publicized. I predict Oklahoma still wins though 45-21.

Mississippi At Wake Forest

Houston Nutt’s will get his first road test in his first year as the Rebels head coach. Wake Forest drilled Baylor last week and will face an SEC team with a new coach and a new formation, the Wild Reb Formation, which is a similar formation used by Arkansas with Darren McFadden last year. The Rebels are a few years away but will get an upset on the road 27-21.

Stanford At Arizona State

Will Stanford build on their momentum after beating Oregon State in week 1? Rudy Carpenter and the Sun Devils will have a lot to say about that and give the Cardinal their first loss of the year 35-17.

Oregon St at Penn St

This is an interesting cross-country match up that pits Joe Pa versus the Pac-10. The irony in this is it has been a while since he has played a team from the Westcoast because generally that only happens in the Rose Bowl. Penn State gets the win 17-10.

San Diego State at Notre Dame

Jimmy Clausen and the golden domers have lot to prove after a horrid season last year. San Diego State should not be a test but the country will be watching to see if Notre Dame is for real or if Charlie Weiss should update his resume. Fighting Irish by 21.

Miami vs Florida Preview

Florida has not beaten Miami since 1985 to put that in perspective your beloved author/leader was 3 at the time and A-ha had the number one song “Take on Me”.

Tim Tebow leads a high-powered Florida Offense against an up and coming Miami team led by head coach Randy Shannon. Miami is infused with a wealth of new talent and fully expects to give Urban Meyer and the Gators all that they can handle in the swamp Saturday. Miami will start a different QB in Robert Marve, but plans to give Jacory Harris some snaps in a dual quarterback system. Keep in mind that Jacory Harris was the proud winner of a Jimmy Award for his heroic efforts against Charleston Southern in week 1.

Florida expects to Brandon Spikes LB and Percy Harvin, their do it all offensive star, to make their first starts of the season this week so there are a lot new faces on both sides of the ball. Miami's roster is loaded with freshman and sophomores. If Miami wins this game they will be a force to be recon with for a while. I don’t think to many people give Miami a chance against Super Tebow and the Gators at the Swamp.

I’m going out on a limb and saying that Miami will win in an upset Saturday 31-21 behind the strength of Graig Cooper and Javarris James at tailback giving their young QB’s time to relax and move the offense. I may be wrong but that is how I’m calling it the U by ten. No additives or preservatives.

Jimmy Awards: Labor Day Weekend

We at 6magazineOnline nominate the best players of the week with a Jimmy Award. A Jimmy is tribute to the best football player of all-time, Mr. Jim Brown. Thank you for paving the way Mr. Brown and showing us fans and players what greatness really is.

Juice Williams, Illinois QB, Jr.

Juice went 26/42 for 451 yards and 5 touchdown passes as he bombed Mizzou's suspect secondary. If he keeps this up he'll book a ticket to NYC at the Downtown Athletic Club for the Heisman Trophy.

Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri LB, Jr.

Weatherspoon had nine tackles (including one for a loss) and two interceptions to key the Tigers' 52-42 victory over Illinois. He capped off his big effort with a clinching 35-yard interception return for a touchdown with 3:18 remaining to seal the game.

Toby Gerhart, Stanford RB, Jr.

Gerhart went ape(you know what) as he rolled up 147 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns including a 46 yard burner as the Cardinal defeated the Oregon State Beavers 36-28.

Jacory Harris, Miami QB, Fr.

The true freshman debuted his dash and darts against Charleston Southern of the FCS. Harris went 16/26 for 190 yards and one touchdown and ran 30 yards for another score.

The Alabama Football team

They steamrolled the #9 Clemson Tigers on Saturday 34-10. Bama totally dominated the Tigers all game long with 419 total yards to Clemson's 188. The tide forced 2 turnovers and held the ball 41:13 to Clemson's 18:47.

Fanhood

Fanhood is almost most as much a measurement of a man as a man's manhood. It shows if you are a waffler or a loyalist through and through. Will you turn on your favorite team at the hint of a bad season or will you ride it out? Will you jump ship when the new hot team is not who you've been riding with since day one? How much fanhood do you have?

I have a lot, maybe too much for my own good. I am Oklahoma Sooner born and Oklahoma Sooner bred. I bleed crimson because everyone's blood is crimson, but the Sooners colors were not crimson you'd know what I mean.

Not only am I Sooner born and bred, I am an alumnus and a former student athlete as well. I loved every minute of my undergraduate education and I miss it dearly. I am now getting my Master's degree at the University of Texas. It is what it is, believe me if I could get the degree I needed at OU, I would have. I view this as nothing more than a two year business trip. I wear as much OU gear as possible on this campus as well.

I went to my first UT football game this weekend. I didn't care to go to any games last year. I of course wore an OU t-shirt. I mean, a few of my friends were giving me a hard time, saying that I could have just wore a white t-shirt if I didn't want to wear a Texas t-shirt. But I posed this analogy to them, if you go on a business trip and it was loaded with attractive members of the opposite sex, would you take off your wedding ring? Wearing a Texas t-shirt would be like cheating on my wife and not wearing an OU shirt at all would be showing shame for where I am from. Like I said, I have alot of Fanhood.

The game was okay. I was highly critical of every mistake the Longhorns made. Every time they scored a touchdown the crowd went nuts and I was the only person in the stadium with his arms crossed in a calm manner. Then it happened. During a timeout, the camera was showing fans on the jumbo-tron. I was on the big screen with all the Texas fans to see with my OU shirt on. The boo birds started pouring in. The camera stayed on me long enough for me to give the highly disrespectful upside down Longhorn sign to the whole entire stadium. I didn't know if I was going to make it out alive and I didn't care. I felt like a war hero who died for his country. I was proud to be a Sooner. Then the timeout ended, and I realized I was daydreaming. I stayed around until halftime in anticipation to make my daydream come to reality and honor my school.

I never got the opportunity, but I will now be at every Longhorn game for the rest of this season to make this daydream a reality.

Peace,

Ricky Writer

Richie Rich

Let's say Rich Rodriguez stayed at West Virginia, would Michigan have won their 2008 opener this past weekend? I say yes. Of course Michigan lost virtually has no returning starters from last year's team.

I was Rodriguez fan when he was leading the Mountaineers, but his true colors showed when he became the man at Michigan. He virtually had no regard for any of the maize and blue's extremely rich tradition. The #1 was not given to the teams top wide receiver which it has been the past few years. Before that, he virtually ran off the teams top wideouts, Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington.

As silly as it may sound, you will soon find out that I hate Reebok and Adidas. I am a Nike man through and through. The great Kanye West said, you can't tell me nothing, and you can't tell me nothing when it comes to negativity and Nike. They are perfect, enough said. So I remember seeing Michigan in Nike since I was a young lad, of course there were some slight uniform changes but the Nike check was always constant.

So much to my dismay, as I watched the the Wolverines take the field, they were dressed in Adidas. Are you kidding me. I have friends who didn't sign with certain schools because the school was sponsored by adidas and Reebok. I didn't know what to think Michigan and adidas together? I realized that Rich Rodriguez is stupid and that you don't go into someone else's home and change things up. Rodriguez should look at his situation as having a time share, because he will tell you himself that he is not Michigan man, having grown up in West Virginia, played there and coached there.

I feel like the young OU sooner fan that I was when Howard Shellenberger was named the new head coach at OU. He changed everything he possibly could and scoffed at the Sooner tradition. He didn't last long either, one year to be exact. I hope the same happens to Rodriguez.

Upset Alert!!!!!

East Carolina upset Virginia Tech on their home field on the strength of a blocked punt and touchdown return by Carolina’s T.J. Lee late in the fourth quarter. The irony in this is that Virginia Tech has won games for years on the strength of Beamer Ball and “died by its own sword” with the return by Lee to win the game for the Pirates.

Utah beat Michigan in the Big House in Rich Rodriguez opening game as head coach for the Wolverines. The loss marks the second consecutive year that Michigan has lost at home losing to Appalachian State least year in their home opener. It will take time for Michigan and Rodriguez to match scheme and personnel in order for the full effect of the spread offense to take hold and make the Michigan a contender once again in the Big 10.

Clemson based on some of the best returning talent in the country and bolstered by what some called the number one recruiting class signed this past February was supposed to contend for a national title. However, Alabama led by Mark Ingram and the rest of their highly regarded recruiting class including Julio Jones made a statement that they are not a year away and that the time is now for Alabama and its football fans.

Alabama dominated Clemson in the trenches from the beginning kickoff to the last whistle of the game. Alabama was able to run behind the strength of their dominant offensive line and Mark Ingram, the freshman tailback, from Michigan to drain the clock and keep the supposedly dangerous Clemson offense off the field. Alabama’s offense held the ball for 41 min and 13 seconds to keep the best one two punch at tailback in the country in James Davis and C.J. Spiller off the field. Alabama tight end Nick Walker was outstanding with 7 receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. The Tide defense although lacking star power held Clemson in check the whole game. Alabama served notice to the country and especially the SEC that their time is now and that the 5 million dollar annual salary that BAMA pays Steve Saban may well be worth it.

The 2008 season has started with these upsets as well as Arkansas state upsetting Texas A&M in the debut for head coach Mike Sherman. Pittsburgh was defeated by Bowling Green as well in what was a horrid opening weekend for the ACC as a whole, which went 2-4 against Division 1 opponents. Furthermore, North Carolina almost lost to McNeese State at home and Maryland barley clipped Delaware 14-7 at home. McNeese State and Deleware are from the Championship Subdivision. If the initial week in college football was any type of indicator for how the 2008 season is going to be played out, the coming season is going to be a wild one. Get your popcorn ready son…….. Get your popcorn ready….

Peace Claudious

Redshirt Reform?

Virginia Tech and Frank Beamer have a problem. After being upset at home Saturday afternoon by Skip Holtz and East Carolina, should Beamer and the Hokies pull the redshirt of highly recruited Tyrod Taylor? The Tech offense was stagnant the whole game. Sean Glennon’s, the starter at quarterback, play was lethargic all game as he completed just 14 of 23 passes for 139 yards and two interceptions. Nearly half of that total came on a 62 yard pass to set up a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Hokie nation now calls for Beamer to pull the redshirt off of the speedy Taylor and hopefully add some spice to the Hokie offense that was in slow motion much of their opening loss Saturday.

Virginia Tech needs to be careful though. Texas redshirted Vince Young his freshman year and it paid dividends with a national title for the Horns in his last year in the program. Mack Brown learned his lesson after mismanaging a few years earlier the Chris Sims and Major Applewhite quarterback situation. Major Applewhite was the older more experienced quarterback yet Chris Sims received the nod over Applewhite time and time again because of his pedigree being the son of Chris Sims and the fact that he came in as a high school phenom from New Jersey that was supposed to lead the Longhorns to the promised land. Sims never reached his potential at Texas and Applewhite added fuel to the fire performing admirably every time he was given a chance to lead the offense, after repeated mistakes by Sims. Brown learned the error of his way and was patient in grooming Young for the starting job which eventually let to Texas beating Reggie Bush and USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl, ruining their chance as a Three-Peat National Champion.

Frank Beamer should be careful in making the decision that most everyone in the country that follows the Tech program is wondering “does Taylor start next week or not?” Pulling the redshirt off the sophomore could help Virginia Tech have a successful season this year. However, Virginia Tech does not have an experienced receiving core and pulling the redshirt could hurt the team a few years from now when/if the extra year of eligibility for Taylor could mean the difference between a national championship or a 8-4 season for the Hokies. It will be interesting to see what how this situation unfolds. If Beamer makes the right decision, whatever that may be he will be looked at as a genius. If he makes the wrong decision, whatever that may be he will be viewed as an idiot. I believe the quarterback who gives Tech the best chance to win should play. Only time will tell who that individual is.

Peace,

Senor Clayborne

Injury Bug Hits Hard on Opening Weekend

Big injuries to big name players was the drawback to a great opening weekend for college football.

Jeremy Maclin of Missouri went down with a serious ankle injury versus Illinois.

Beanie Wells was carted off the field after injuring his foot versus Youngstown State.

Knowshon Moreno the starting tailback at Georgia pulled up with a possible hamstring injury on a touchdown run Saturday as well.

More injury woes for Georgia as starting defensive tackle Jeff Owens was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

Percy Harvin is still struggling with a heel problem and is probable for next weekend’s game at Miami. The speedy wide receiver was held out of the Gators opening game this weekend against Hawaii.

Wells and Maclin’s x-rays were negative and more information will be released this week as far as the severity of their injuries.

Stay Safe,

Linus the Leopard
