Hurricane Gustav struck New Orleans this past Monday. Many feared it would be a Category 4 hurricane much like Katrina three years ago, but thankfully it was not it was only a Category 2.
Many Louisiana football programs took the proper precautions. Tulane evacuated New Orleans and went to Birmingham on Saturday. They practiced Monday morning at Samford University. Tulane plays its season opener at Alabama on Saturday and will practice in Birmingham all week.
Louisiana-Lafayette has a bye this week and players were allowed to stay or evacuate. McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., plays at home game against Delta State on Saturday and players were given the same options to stay or evacuate.
The LSU football team which is an hour Northwest of New Orleans chose to stay at home and take on the storm. They were not in any extreme danger because they were not as close to the coast.
Southeastern Louisiana moved their football operations from Hammond, La., to Oxford, Miss., on Sunday. They were using Ole Miss' practice fields and workout rooms Monday in preparation for their game at Mississippi State.
Nicholls State in Thibodaux, LA had postponed its game at New Mexico State this week and the storm expected to hit Thibodaux extremley hard causing most players to evacuate.
The New Orleans Saints went to Indiana and practiced at the RCA dome, but soon after Gustav passed the Saints announced they would return to New Orleans to play their home opener agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Superdome. Many Superdome officials stayed in New Orleans to weather the storm and watch the stadium. The stadium never lost power and sustained Gustav's winds.
The levees in the city stayed intact as well. There was one in the Southeast region of the city that caused officals to take extra caution, but other than that everything is all good in the N.O.
There are people without power and there is lots of damage but it is no where near as bad as Katrina. We at 6magazineonline have the city of New Orleans in our prayers as well as all those cities and countries affected by this storm.
We encourage you to donate to help the victims of Gustav, visit http://networkforgood.blogspot.com/2008/07/hurricane-gustav-how-you-can-help.html.
